Ambition why some people

There are, of course, downsides to many traits that are generally considered positive. Overall, ambition can help someone succeed. It helps give us goals to reach and the passion to want to achieve them. It keeps us motivated and focused. It keeps us engaged with our goals, hopes, and dreams. However, there are some cases in which being overly ambitious can have detrimental consequences.

When people pursue their ambitions at a cost to others read: Caesar , it can often harm not just those people, but the ambitious person herself, since people will come to regard her as greedy and self-involved.

We all have those moments — moments when we lack ambition, drive, and passion for things. We all need a little motivation , a little push from time to time. Some people just need a bit more of a push.

Sometimes all it takes to help give someone a little boost of ambition is to be more outwardly ambitious yourself. Just keep pushing forward.

In reality, becoming more ambitious is a process that entails very small, very achievable steps. All it takes is focus, dedication, patience, and hard work. The first thing and probably one of the most vital things you need to do is set some SMART goals for yourself. Maybe you want to get a book published.

Set an ambitious goal for yourself to get there. Give yourself targets to hit — writing X amount of words a day, or sitting down for an hour just to get the creative juices flowing. Maybe you want to slowly but surely start expanding your professional network. You could set a goal for yourself where you attend one networking event a month, and at each event talk to at least one person. They just have to motivate you to keep moving forward, which is exactly what ambition is all about.

Another important step—one that may seem daunting—is taking risks. At the end of the day, they might really pay off. Being ambitious means pursuing your desires and reaching your goals. But the more you push yourself, the happier you will be, and the closer you will be to achieving your ambitious goals. Buy yourself that new video editing software. Give yourself a wardrobe makeover. Generally speaking, yes, being an ambitious person is a very good thing.

It is the drive that pushes us forward to bigger and better things, and it can be contagious. If your friends and family see you working hard and getting great results and not being swayed by any obstacle that might get in your way, then they may begin to emulate that behavior in the hopes of achieving a similar result.

However, where things go downhill is with being selfishly ambitious. This means that a person is so driven that they put their own needs above the needs of others. Tomasz has a dance recital and nothing would mean more to him than having his constantly overworked uncle put his work aside for just one night so that he can watch his nephew.

His uncle could easily postpone his meeting scheduled for that same night so that he could go, but it is more important to him that he proves to his boss what kind of go-getter he is. His uncle skips the recital and goes to the meeting. Tomasz is devastated and bungles his performance. The talent scout in the audience focuses their attention elsewhere when Tomasz might otherwise have danced his way into a scholarship at a respected dance school.

In this example, the uncle puts his own selfish needs above the needs of his nephew. This is an example of selfish ambition and could lead to poor quality of life. While one person is constantly working long hours, their co-worker is counting down the minutes until they can punch out at p.

What is it that makes some people more ambitious person than others? What does being ambitious mean insofar as how it affects people so differently? Because being ambitious is a personality trait, this makes it a psychological issue, and psychological issues are never simple. If a person is presented with a challenge that scares them, and they cannot work up the courage to take on that challenge, then they will withdraw.

If you lack nerve, you also lack being ambitious. So, what traits does an ambitious person tend to have? Well, for one thing, an ambitious person tends to create goals that they keep to themselves. Why else would you be sharing it?

However, keeping your goal close to the vest denies you that false sense of satisfaction and keeps your drive to get things done intact. If you like writing, you could do some exploratory journaling.

Forget about spelling and punctuation and grammar. When the timer ends, read what you wrote and underline anything that gives you insight into what might be hindering your progress toward your goal. From there, brainstorm possible solutions. If writing is not your thing, you could talk to a trusted friend or family member.

And, if you feel comfortable doing so, you could ask for feedback. She is easy to talk to and gives the impression of genuine interest and concern. David MacDonald, CEO of Softchoice, a Toronto-based business that helps companies with technology, is another ambitious executive, but he never had his sights on the corner office, he said.

In the corporate world, the people who rise to the top tend to be fairly even-keeled. They have to be likeable, social and hard working, but more importantly, they have to be as normal as possible. They just need to be committed to the institution. I got to where I am because of my strong sales background and I got on board.
